Jack Petchey Glee Club Challenge 2017

After taking a year off from the Glee Club Challenge, Phoenix have returned to the competition with an entry featuring a mix of current and former Phoenix Students, aged between 11 and 24. The 2017 entry is led by Phoenix Tutor and Choreographer Katie Barker-Dale, as well as Phoenix Newcomer Tom Marlow, a music teacher who is leading the vocal side of the entry.

After successfully gaining an entry place with their rendition of Frankie goes to Hollywood’s “The Power of Love”, the group this year worked towards a second song which they would have to showcase at a Bootcamp workshop in Epping. The second choice was a medley of Sia songs, including “Cheap Thrills”, “Elastic Heart”, and “The Greatest”. This upbeat number featured more intense choreography, combined with complex vocals to showcase skills in acting,¬†singing and dancing.

At the Bootcamp Phoenix worked with a variety of tutors and industry professionals to help explore the technical aspects of the songs as well as finding a story that both the audience and the performers can connect to. Many of the tutors at the Bootcamp have worked previously for the Glee Club challenge and twice the group were told that this entry is possibly the strongest Phoenix have been, vocally and in terms of dance.

The next step for the group is to prepare for the Regional-Finals on the 4th February at the Chelmsford Civic Theatre. Only 3 out of 1o groups in the Regional-Finals will make it through to the Grand Final at the O2 Indigo stage, so Phoenix will be working on their performances to ensure that 2017 will be the best they have ever been.
