Grand Final at The IndigO2 at the O2 Awaits!
Don’t stop believin’! With this in mind, the Phoenix Glee Club powers on to the Jack Petchey Glee Club Challenge 2012 Grand Final at the indigO2 theatre at the O2. With a seating capacity of 1700, this is going to be an event you’ll not want to miss. The competition was fierce, with a very strong standard being set by the other groups, but the Phoenix Glee Club won their regional final at the Palace Theatre in Southend-on-sea, wowing the judges with their performances of ‘Gives You Hell’ and ‘We Are Young’, both expertly choreographed by Katie Barker-Dale. Starting with a bit of dialogue written by group member Drew Gregg, the first number ‘Gives You Hell’ (pictured left) was a show of individuality, with each member portraying a specific American high school character, ranging from geeks and bullies, to a friendly sports guy! Everyone gave an outstanding performance, especially Connor Linden who started the piece with a solo. The piece was great fun all round and left a strong impression on the judges; however Phoenix kept the high standard up with their final song of the night in the second half, a festival themed version of the song ‘We Are Young’, with the group kitted up in wellies and waterproofs. Connor Linden provided guitar accompaniment, and Grace Wheeler, David Ballard, Kali Dronsfield and Amy Moulder all showed their vocal talents with solo parts. With that done, all that was left was to wait for the judge’s final decision…
With all 8 groups waiting with held breath for the announcement of the three winning groups, the tension was almost unbearable. After what seemed like an age, Phoenix was the first winner announced. What followed is what can only be described as uncontrollable happiness, as with cheering, whooping and group hugging, the members of Phoenix Glee Club realised that all their hard work had paid off, and they’d made it to the Grand Final! (pictured right)
The group has 10 members, 5 girls and 5 boys, all students who are highly experienced, and take lessons during the week at Phoenix. Conor O’Sullivan, 20, Connor Linden, 18, Toby Gibbs, 19, Drew Gregg, 15, Amy Moulder, 18 and Grace Wheeler, 17, have all taken lessons in Musical Theatre, Dance and Drama at Phoenix; Louise Austin, 14, and David Ballard, 15, take lessons in Dance and Drama whilst Georgia Collins, 15, takes Drama and Musical Theatre lessons. Kali Dronsfield, 14, takes Drama lessons, and her and David Ballard have both been in Cameron Mackintosh’s production of Oliver! in the West End. With a group full of this much talent, and with Katie Barker Dale’s choreographic skills at the helm, there’s no reason to believe that they can’t go all the way, and win the Grand Final!
A coach trip to the Grand Final on Sunday November 18th with places costing £26 to include travel and entry ticket is being organised by Phoenix and details will be distributed shortly.
